Ten10 – Open source

Posted by sreedharj on February 16, 2009

In today’s IT It is Open source, Open source and Open source in 2009 and beyond. I just attended an Unconference in Tenth Planet Technologies on open source service management framework. I know little about open source and ITIL. All I could conjecture is open source is IT’s Johannesburg and all we need is to extract and refine open source and add value to our business obviously at affordable cost.

In Tenth Planet Technologies apart from open source what attracted me were the hand prints of different people on the wall symbolizing open source, the unity and collaboration in creation & adversity. The wall paintings with the touch of Indian heritage were simply superb.

Tenth Planet very recently opened their open source youth employment centre “ChipKidz” with the vision of eradicating unemployment, not by offering jobs but by providing opportunities to cash in.

It was really good experience to be present on the maiden unconference of Ten10. As a Volunteer would contribute to the vision of Ten10

You can also contribute just visit www.ten10tpt.ning.com to know more about Ten10

Job seekers visit www.chipkidz.com to cash in on open source opportunities.

Thanks

Voice of Penguins

Voice of Penguins

The Open source renaissance started well in nineties and has really picked up momentum. IT is no longer a luxury as many Small and Medium enterprises have implemented the luxurious million dollar ERP, CRM business solutions for a mere 10,000 dollars. This has been possible only because of open source, it has made IT affordable. This indicates that open source is growing. Is the growth rate fast? The answer is No; there are lot apprehensions that run on the minds of many people. The apprehensions can be summed up as few questions.
Is it secure?
Is the source code safe?
Is the source code documented?
Where can I find the right expertise?
To whom can I outsource?
—————————————— Many more can be there.
Well all these mindsets have hampered the growth rate of open source.
The question is how to leverage the wealth of open source ore. How open source mining should be done. How to filter the impurities, how to make it an asset?
Now it is all about extraction and refining process from its ore the source forge.
Towards this Tenth Planet Technologies which is an open source company has decided to share all its Open source success stories and help Ten10 in creating this process. Many greats have commented that software will be offered as a service
“The nature of software will be changing; software will be delivered in many cases as a service across the Internet instead of a packaged product.” ——–Bill Gates
Should we reinvent the wheel as many process frameworks are already available?
No it is not reinvention but the customization of existing ITIL V3 for open source. The customization brings agile framework to address software engineering.
In other words Ten10 is a “Service Management Framework” using “ITIL + BSC + AUP” to deliver “Open Source Services & Support” for the “Open Source Business Solutions packaged as SaaS”.
